The Circuit Court is the trial court of general jurisdiction in Virginia. It is the sole court with the authority to try all types of cases except as specifically provided by statute. The circuit court has the jurisdiction of 1) the trial of all misdemeanors originally charged in circuit court; 2) the trial of all felonies committed by adults, and those felonies committed by juveniles aged fourteen and older whose cases have been certified for trial in the circuit court by the judge or a juvenile and domestic relations court; and 3) all appeals from the general district court and juvenile and domestic relations district court.
